Thos. Moser is Repeat Designer for NCSU Library Furniture

Long-lasting relationship with North Carolina State University provides another opportunity for Thos. Moser tables and chairs in campus buildings

For the third time, North Carolina State University (NCSU) has selected Thos. Moser to furnish one of its projects. In early 2013, more than 125 chairs and tables were built and installed for the Quiet Reading Room of the University’s new James B. Hunt Jr. Library. Though the library features modern architecture and high-tech learning spaces, it was important that this particular space felt more classic and timeless and that the seating reflected the traditional elements of a Bank of England style chair, so Thos. Moser was tasked with designing a new chair for the Quiet Reading Room.

“We have a strong appreciation of tradition, and we knew Thos. Moser could design a chair to meet our unique design,” said Susan Nutter, NCSU vice Provost and Director of Libraries Administration. “We have had a strong relationship with Thos. Moser through the years, and have been pleased with all of their work. It was only fitting that we worked with them again.”

A result of this project was the Hunt Chair, named after the new library and the former governor of North Carolina. The Hunt Chair is a new interpretation of the hardworking, long-admired Regent Chair that has been used in several academic and office settings. The Hunt Chair looks contemporary with a clean, sweeping design that complements the library’s architecture. It is available with or without an upholstered back, but for the Quiet Reading Room, the University chose the comfort of the upholstered back.

In designing and constructing the custom study tables, cabinetmakers had to employ special engineering to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the lumber for such a large surface. The tables measure 26 feet and were custom designed to accommodate the current and future technological needs of the library. Each table includes power, data and custom lighting. The table tops sit atop three oval shaped pedestals and are fashioned out of 2 inch thick slabs of solid American Black Cherry, sourced from Western Pennsylvania.

All of the Thos. Moser furniture can be customized to meet design requirements.
